چکیده

An experimental micromagnetoflowcell viscometer was fabricated to enable viscosity measurements for microscopic quantities of liquid. The device uses measurement of the terminal velocity of superparamagnetic microparticles to determine the fluid properties. Motion of these particles is controlled by the magnetic field generated from microscopic electromagnetic loops. Analytical modelling has been carried out to predict the pattern of the magnetic field. Magnetic forces in the range of 10 to 10 N are generated at a current density of 10A/m. An experimental micromagnetoflowcell has been designed and fabricated and initial experiments have been conducted, using high speed video microscopy. These demonstrate local control of the particles using the magnetic fields, but there is a tendency for the particles to agglomerate in water based fluids, requiring surfactant treatment in future experiments.

Micro-Viscometer for Measuring Shear-Varying Blood Viscosity over a Wide-Ranging Shear Rate

In this study, a micro-viscometer is developed for measuring shear-varying blood viscosity over a wide-ranging shear rate. The micro-viscometer consists of 10 microfluidic channel arrays, each of which has a different micro-channel width. The proposed design enables the retrieval of 10 different shear rates from a single flow rate, thereby enabling the measurement of shear-varying blood viscosi...

Highly Stable Liquid Metal-Based Pressure Sensor Integrated with a Microfluidic Channel

Pressure measurement is considered one of the key parameters in microfluidic systems. It has been widely used in various fields, such as in biology and biomedical fields. The electrical measurement method is the most widely investigated; however, it is unsuitable for microfluidic systems because of a complicated fabrication process and difficult integration. Moreover, it is generally damaged by...

Microfluidic extensional rheometry using a hyperbolic contraction geometry

Microfluidic devices are ideally suited for the study of complex fluids undergoing large deformation rates in the absence of inertial complications. In particular, a microfluidic contraction geometry can be utilized to characterize the material response of complex fluids in an extensionally-dominated flow, but the mixed nature of the flow kinematics makes quantitative measurements of material f...

Designing a dual-core photonic crystal fiber coupler by means of microfluidic infiltration

We report the results of our study on the role of microfluidic infiltration technique in improving the coupling characteristics of dual-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) couplers. Using the finite element method (FEM), we evaluate the effective mode area, dispersion and coupling parameters of an infiltrated dual-core PCF. We use these parameters to design a compact and reconfigurable coupler by...
